Rhiannon Giddens and Francesco Turrisi - appearing at the Blue Mountains Music Festival of Folk, Roots and Blues, 2018 - in Katoomba!

Rhiannon Giddens (USA) and Francesco Turrisi (Italy)

Rhiannon Giddens is an American folk and traditional music artist who plays fiddle and banjo, and Francesco Turrisi is an Italian pianist and percussionist well versed in jazz, early music and Mediterranean music; at first blush, their worlds don’t overlap.

Working together the two musicians trace musical globalism by re-imagining the encounter of the banjo and the frame drum, and other instruments, through their journey from Africa, the Middle East, through southern Europe and England, and over to the Americas. Giddens and Turrisi’s new album There Is No Other was recorded in just five days with little editing and overdubbing in Ireland with producer Joe Henry, and is at once a condemnation of “othering” and a celebration of the spread of ideas, connectivity, and shared experience.
